A roof drain is invisible when it is working and impossible to ignore when it is not, and on the scale of roof we work on around Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, a single failed drain can put ponding water across thousands of square feet of membrane before anyone on the ground notices anything is wrong. Drains and scuppers are the part of a roof we push owners to think about year-round, well before water is ever standing on the deck.

Two Very Different Loads a Drain Has to Handle

Summer thunderstorms rolling in off the Poconos and Endless Mountains can dump a lot of rain in a short window, and a roof's drainage system has to move that volume fast enough that it never ponds long enough to stress a seam or overload a structural design limit. That is the load most drain systems get designed around from the start.

Spring thaw is the load that catches people off guard. When a winter's worth of accumulated snow melts fast, the water volume reaching the drains over several days can exceed what a normal storm event delivers, and it is doing that at the same time ice may still be partially blocking a scupper opening or a drain strainer from the last hard freeze. That combination, sustained volume plus partial ice blockage, is when we see the most drain-related ponding calls.

Internal Drains Versus Scuppers on This Region's Roofs

Which system a roof uses depends mostly on how it was originally built, and both have their own maintenance profile here. Internal drains route water through the building's interior plumbing, which keeps them protected from wind and ice on the outside but means a clog is completely hidden until water is already standing on the roof. Scuppers, which drain through the parapet wall to an exterior leader or straight off the building, are easier to visually check but are more exposed to ice formation at the opening during a hard freeze.

On buildings using scuppers, we pay particular attention to the opening itself during winter visits, since even a partial ice blockage there can back water up across a wide section of roof before it ever overflows visibly. On buildings with internal drains, strainer baskets get checked and cleared on a schedule specifically because nobody sees a problem building there until it is already causing ponding.

What Gets Checked, Repaired, or Replaced

Drain and scupper work covers a range from simple clearing to full replacement of a corroded or undersized system. A handful of specific issues account for most of the work we do in this category:

Drainage as Part of Roof Health, Not a Separate Item

We do not treat drainage as an isolated fixture. A drain problem is very often the root cause behind a leak that shows up somewhere else on the roof, since standing water finds the nearest weak seam or flashing detail and works its way in there instead of through the drain that should have carried it away. Any leak repair we do near a low point on the roof includes checking the drain serving that area, even if the drain itself was not the reported problem.

How often should roof drains be cleared here?

At minimum, before winter and again right after spring thaw, since those are the two points where blockage does the most damage. Buildings near tree cover or under construction dust nearby often need more frequent clearing.

Can a drain problem cause a leak somewhere else on the roof?

Yes, and it is one of the most common patterns we see. Ponding water from a blocked drain finds the nearest weak point in the membrane, which is often not directly above the drain itself.

Are scuppers or internal drains better for our building?
